Jack's life is further complicated by an extra marital affair that further distracts him from the case. Paul becomes suspect as more clues unveil themselves. Paul's return from abroad was not a voluntary one and his expeditions were paid for nefariously. All clues as to how and why the killer acts as he does are exposed just as Jack is removed from the case.

Jack convinces Paul to continue on with him beyond the call of duty and in direct violation of orders. The F.B.I. is brought on to finish the case after a victim and sarcophogus are left on city hall's steps, humiliating Jack publicly. Jack and Paul find a final element, missed in prior investigation.

Together, they find the home of the demented killer in rural country atmosphere. Here in this remote place, the killer has molded the landscape partway into his reality by carving hieroglyphics into the tree trunks and making an altar out of the hillsides. Jack confronts the killer as he runs amok off a cliff to his death. Jack gets demoted and Paul returns to Egypt.
